Another battle Rport Dec. 30th, 2009 @ 07:45 am
[info]lpetersson
Mission: Annihilation
Deployment type: Dawn of War

Space Wolves: Njal Stormcaller in TDA, 2x Lone wolf in TDA SS/TH, 3x 6xLong Fangs with MLs, 2x 10xGH with 2cPG 1xPF, 2x 5xGH with 1 flamer, 2x 3Swiftclaws +1Attack Bike 1xPF, 2xRazorbacks with TL-LCs.
Each Swiftclaw pack have a Wolf Guard with Combi-Melta/Frost Blade assigned assigned and one WG with with FrostAxe and Combi-Melta goes to my Grey Hunters.

Tyranids ([info]cbr_paul):
1x Winged Hive Tyrant, 1x Shootyfex, 1 Zoanthrope, 20 or so Hormagaunts, 6x 10 or so Genestealers and 1 Broodlord with a 'stealer retinue.
I could be wrong on some of those as I don't know the tyranids too well...
And the game ends with a 9-9 draw.

So, what have we learnt from this? Well, I screwed up my deployment pretty badly, so I really deserved to lose. I'm happy it became a draw, that was better than I deeserved after such a poor deployment.

Other than that, I don't think either of us made any glaring mistakes. I have seen the effectiveness of Njal in slowing down enemies (I really must make notes of what he casts and when) and the skill with which Lone Wolves takes down MCs...

Thoughts/comments? (Other than comments regarding the unpaintedness of my army :-p)

Goth Goes to the Big Apple: Christmas in Jersey Dec. 30th, 2009 @ 03:30 pm
[info]illdrinn
There may have been a bit of holiday mood going around for the next couple of days, sleeping in, eating giant burgers, making egg nog, possibly doing more shopping *cough*

There was also Die Hard, fuzzy Christmas slippers and wrapping presents in time for Christmas day, just lovely.

Christmas itself involved getting up and putting on my evil elf outfit and driving up to Dog's parents place. The small NJ towns and their cutesy festive ways looked just gorgeous in the snow. I think I gripped my hands to my chest and said the word 'quaint' about 15 times.

On arrival we had multiple types of meat before settling in for gifts around the tree. I love the family ornaments on the tree, from local sporting teams to hand made items celebrating family milestones the whole thing hangs together just beautifully... which would be difficult if the entire thing weren't 9 foot tall!

The best thing about visiting someone else's family for Christmas is you get to smile at all the cheer without being involved in any of the feuds. The Moraskis seem to believe pretty firmly in "leaving each other alone to play with our gifts" so after all the gifting everyone settled down with laptop/DS/computer and had a long and quiet day in the warmth watching a MythBusters marathon and sitting in the warm scent of roasting beef.

Christmas dinner was just lovely and a real compliment to the chef, the greens especially were welcome after a few days of heavy meat and cheese filled food.

Afterwards devolved into endless stories of travel, Australia, the weather and then embarrassing family tales that I wish I'd had in my repertoire years ago. Unfortunately jetlag, the warm house and several rounds of port got the better of me and I crashed out unconscious as soon as I sat back on the couch. I was supposedly pried out of the car still unconscious and hugging my new squishable T-rex for dear life, but was evidently steered into bed and separated from my shoes and coat as I woke up fully clothed in bed several hours later, yet again streaming sweat despite the freezing temperature.

Goth Goes to the Big Apple: The Trip to Jersey Dec. 30th, 2009 @ 03:02 pm
[info]illdrinn
Arright I've been a bit lazy with the blogging, but in my defense it's been Christmas and I've been visiting friends.

Last Wednesday it was time to transfer out to New Jersey to [info]fatherdog's place in Hamilton. But first I had to fit all this shopping into my luggage. Woops.

Eventually it got in okay though and we checked out of the Mount Morris, which was a shame as it was a damn beautiful house and just the sort of lifestyle I could get used to. As we were waiting for a cab a town car showed up and offered to take us to Penn Station for less than the cost of a normal cab; I could certainly get used to being driven about in a town car also!

"Neither rain nor snow nor glom of nit" - the main Ankh Morpork NYC Post Office across from Penn Station.

Unfortunately that was the last of the good luck for our trip. For one thing the cold had shut down half the NJ transit system and so Penn Station was packed to the rafters with angry holiday goers. While waiting for tickets I was approached by a small queer goth boy who wanted to know "do you have to dye your hair to get it that way?" and then insisted that he usually dresses better but was Christmasing with family and had to dress normally.

The train set up in New York is to put it bluntly, bloody awful. They don't tell you which platform the train pulls into until 10 minutes before the train departs, meaning not only do you not have time to get to the train with luggage but also the entire station is filled with loitering passengers waiting desperately to find out when their train leaves. What then followed was a mad rush of boots and suitcases down a rickety escalator - not working of course and then a mad attempt to get people, luggage, large coats and New York Anger into the train carriage before it leaves. Thankfully there were some nice people behind us because my suitcase? Doesn't actually fit down the stairs.

This meant not only us not getting a seat, but the amount of luggage in tow meant that we were blocking part of the walk way and attracting glares from other passengers. The trip itself was fairly uneventful apart from the evidently mentally unwell person who got on at Newark, scared half the train and got off 2 stations later. Special mention should be given to the excellent sammiches available at Penn Station which made the trip quite bearable - the cold meats in America kick the living hell out of anything we have at home.

Now people have pulled faces when I said I was going to New Jersey for Christmas, but this is Hamilton, just down the road from Princeton and much of it looks like this. Quaint small town America, connected by endless, endless freeways.

Still Dog's house is mega cute :o)

Now figuring that I would be drained by the whole public transit in NJ experience the only thing I'd planned for the day was to see the mega stores so it was off to the Mall! I was quite surprised to find that the malls nearby are all strip malls with no indoor connections on the shops.

Everything's bigger in America! Alcohol seems to be sold by size rather than quality. Mind you at $38 a bottle for VSOP Cognac and $31USD for Piper Hiedsick? There seemed no point to choosing lower quality drinks.

Afterwards we hit up Wegman's which is a larger supermarket that rather impressed me; sure there's the spray on cheese and endless range of sodas you'd expect but Wegman's has a fairly significant range of whole grain breads, fresh greens and organic foods. The conclusion I have come to is that it is very expensive to eat well in America and very cheap to eat poorly. In the end the groceries came to about the same price as you'd expect a similar sized shopping basket to cost you at home, just some things are very oddly priced comparatively.

Of course I had *insisted* that I be taken to a Hot Topic the minute we were near malls, so here's me doing some obligatory alternative gone mainstream shopping. Sadly the goth friendly items at this particular Hot Topic were exceptionally limited, but I did get GIR hair clips, and that makes me happy.

To be fair the ridiculous patriotism is fairly understated out in New Jersey however I just had to get a picture of this mural.

The rest of the day was spent as it should be, with laptops out, in front of the TV, drinking ciders and talking nonsense. Hmm pleasant.

THE DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS – BBC1
Photobucket

There must be some occasions during an actor’s career where the, ‘what’s the worst job you’ve ever had?’ question in the pub after the day's filiming filming creates a particularly telling silence among all present. The BBC promised a remarkable script, a stellar cast, but what we got was beyond belief. It would have been far better if it had been about a group of triffids having a day out, or running a garden centre.

I think the main problem here was the ludicrous script and in a story where to lose your sight made you helpless having a director with no visual flair whatsoever did rather doom this project from the outset. At one point our heroic Doctor and Triffid Expert, Bill, and his lovely headstrong TV journalist sidekick, Jo, pull their car up sharpish and get out to gaze down from a bridge, along a length of motorway strewn with something or other. ‘It was then that we knew what we were up against…’ What? What was it? It was so poorly presented we hardly saw anything.

At one point the wily Jo escapes from the clutches of arch bad guy Torrence, played with a desperate air by a clearly baffled Eddie Izzard, and as she lurches out into the dark and dangerous London streets there are sheets of paper blowing everywhere. We can only assume these were late script re-writes, underway during that night’s shoot.

Part 1 was bad. Part 2 made it seem like an old and much missed friend.

And we are now in Seoul! Dec. 30th, 2009 @ 12:05 am

That was one fairly decent plane trip. I think Korean Air are pretty good (judging from this one flight I've had with them). Having said that I do not look forward to the next 12 hours we have to get through before we reach London tomorrow night.

It's Snowing here! Had a really nice walk around the area with Jus and saw a local market as well as a few shops. Would be nice to come back and explore properly some day.

Anyway, going to go and do stuff, but for now I'll leave you with an image of the snow-covered lettuce/cabbage/whatever-it-is that is in flower boxes all along the streets.

My mind feels empty, blank & full of white.... it always does after a big weekend. All my thoughts feel stolen & it takes a little while to restart & load all the files again. I partly doubt that I can do it all again this week. I am exhausted, not just physically, mentally I am exhausted, I don't think people see half of what I do for them, I feel like I am constantly maintaining, constantly catering to everything, everyone around me. Don't get me wrong, I am extrodinarily happy, but being happy is something in itself that needs maintaining & sometimes I feel like I have not the time to replenish, to relax & to take care of myself the way I should.

A few months ago i was bored enough to take some pretty pictures of myself because for once i had a good idea, but as those things go i accidentally destroyed my slave drive and those pictures with it. Thankfully most of my files i was able to recover, but the best shots were some of those that were too damaged, only appearing as thumbs.

I never really got over it, they were some nice pictures but few days ago i decided to try to recreate them, so here are the end results. They aren't as good as that first batch probably because they aren't the same but here they are.

The morale of this story is always back up your files and pictures.

THE BOYS
SICK ON YOU
The Harry May Record Company

The only people who didn’t like The Boys during Punk were elitist arseholes, because you couldn’t dislike The Boys. They didn’t really look Punkish, which hardly helped them early on, in fact they looked like the younger brothers of The Lurkers. Having a core sensibility which was moving between The Buzzcocks in sour poppy tendencies, and Generation X for the inverted poignancy and humour, also made them fade out of focus instead of standing out easily. Honest John Plain, Duncan ‘Kid’ Reid, Jack Black, Casino Steel (which always seemed such a cool name) and Matt Dangerfield, which sounded like a vet with attitude, were okay, through and through. (Most of them are still active, and they now have Vom Ritchie on drums.)

I bought most of their early records, and remember thinking something was seriously wrong when their debut album came out and the sleeve was almost spectacularly shite. However it did contain the opening track of this great compilation, ‘Sick On You.’ An idiotically stupid punk stereotype, possibly unintentional, it contained the jaunty claim, “I’m sick to death of everything you do, and if I’m gonna have a puke you bet your life I’ll puke on you,” which doesn’t actually seem to make sense. How many people do you know who have vengefully vomited?

TL;DR Dec. 28th, 2009 @ 11:39 pm
[info]badpauly
I've been a bad blogger, so will try to catch up soon.

So far, recent highlights have been...

Lots of good friends, and lots of silly gossip.
Cocktails of doom... and drunkenness.
Planning of 2010 DJing gigs/slots/stuff.
Dealing with fuckwits.
Being 20 again and seeing iNsuRge live - and actually telling Chris just what influence they had.
Making plans for 2010 that might involve actually pulling my finger out and using some of the tools available.
Having such great tools available - you guys rock!

The rest, while not actual highlights, have been fun/interesting/confusing/colourful/tasty/swelling/look-a-plane...

Since this is my last (likely) post of the year, hope all is well, that if it isn't, you know you are loved, that I get to see you all soon (if I didn't over the last few days) and that next year starts off as good as the best this year had to offer, then exceeds itself.

And to those few close friends having a cunt of a time at the moment, you know I'm about, one way or the other, and I'm hoping that shit improves. We have dates to turn that shit into gold after the 4th, so lock it in.

Peace, love, mung-beans. And other InappropriatePauly thoughts.

Seeya in 2010... unless I'll seeya in Perf before that.

outings Dec. 28th, 2009 @ 07:17 pm
[info]andricongirl
last night we went and saw Sherlock holmes. must say Watson was great (Jude law, well improving with age) quite an enjoyable film all up, and a good few hours entertainment.

I did think the woman playing Holmes love interest was way too young to be his love/nemesis adventurer criminal world traveller type, and that annoyed me a bit, but the actress was fine enough other than being at least 10 years too young.

today we went to the Zoo. public holiday on top of xmas break meant it was awash with prams and strollers and toddlers and small children so the journey through a lot of the exhibits meant we just didnt get to see some things (monkeys, butterflies etc.) as it was crammed full, and i couldnt be bothered , but got to see most things and took lots of pics , whcih I'll go through once i finish editing and uploading my Mooloolaba aquarium and my xmas snaps :]

Aesthetic Perfection // DJ // WTF!? Dec. 27th, 2009 @ 06:40 pm
[info]aviolentemotion
It may sound a bit strange, and hell, it does to me, too, but I am now officially available as a DJ. After so much touring, and being exposed to many different styles of music, I felt compelled to get out and share it with the world. Like a mad scientist, I've locked myself away and tediously, meticulously learned the tools of the DJ trade. Now, I've emerged semi conscious, a little less sane, but nonetheless qualified to get it going.

Interested organizers and events should contact:

US: info@bpmtalent.com
Rest of the world: info@aesthetic-perfection.net

Cheers
